DNA Aunt/Uncle Test

In the event that an alleged father or alleged mother is not available for testing, the missing parent’s siblings can be tested against the child using the DNA Aunt or Uncle test to determine the likelihood of biological relationship. Whenever the parent(s) in question are available for testing, the DNA paternity or maternity test is always recommended over the DNA Aunt/Uncle test. However, in situations where the alleged parents are missing or deceased, then the Aunt or Uncle can be tested to investigate the likelihood that they are the true biological aunt or uncle of a child in questions. The full genetic report is included with every test.

Description

During a DNA aunt/uncle test, a buccal swab (mouth swab) specimen is collected from the aunt or uncle and the nephew or niece in question. The sample contains cells that contain genetic information in the form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Each person’s DNA represents a unique “genetic blueprint,” similar to a fingerprint.

In the laboratory, the DNA is extracted from the cells and specific regions of the DNA are amplified using a process called PCR (polymerase chain reaction) for careful examination. The DNA pattern of the aunt or uncle is compared to the DNA pattern of the nephew or niece. A statistical analysis is performed based on the match type typically expected for true aunt/uncle and nephew/niece pairs, and a “kinship index” is obtained.

The kinship index is a numerical value that reflects the likelihood of a biological relationship between the aunt/uncle and nephew/niece. True biologically related aunt/uncle and nephew/niece pairs are typically expected to have a kinship index value that is greater than 1.0 in their DNA aunt/uncle test report. Conversely, individuals who are not biologically related are expected to have a kinship index value that is less than 1.0.

Turnaround Time

DNA Aunt/Uncle Testing is completed 3 to 5 business days after the samples arrive at the laboratory. Results are released immediately once the testing is completed.

FAQ

Who should consider the Private Test option?

The private home test kit option is suitable for individuals who wish to perform the test for personal knowledge only and not for court use. If a private test is ordered, a buccal swab (mouth) swab DNA kit is sent directly to the parties involved in the test for sample collection. The sample collection process is quick, easy and discreet and takes just minutes to complete. Once the laboratory receives the samples, testing is completed within 3 to 5 business days.

Can the kit be shipped to more than one address if the parties live in different cities?

If the people being tested live at different addresses, we can divide the DNA testing kit and send each part to separate locations. The kits have barcodes to make sure the samples are still tested together when they arrive at the laboratory. To get a split kit, write “please split this kit” in the comments section of the online order form and give us the name and address of where to send each part. For example, you could say “send the Alleged Father’s part to…(provide name and address)” and “send the Child’s part to…(provide name and address).” Alternatively, you can have the complete kit shipped to you and divide it yourself, and then send the parts to the other people involved in the testing.

Who should consider the Legal Test option?

Legal DNA tests are commonly used to provide court-admissible evidence for or against biological relationships in various legal scenarios, including court cases, custody and estate disputes, and inheritance. If you choose the legal testing option, we will schedule an appointment for all parties involved to provide samples at one of our designated Genetrack chain-of-custody sample collection facilities, which are located across Canada for your convenience.

What if the parties to be tested live in different cities or do not wish to attend the same appointment?

We know that it can be challenging when people involved in DNA testing live in different cities. To make things easier, we can arrange separate appointments for each person at their own location. Our scheduling department will coordinate the appointment dates for each individual, making the process as smooth and hassle-free as possible.

Is the Private Home DNA Test as accurate as the Legal Test?

The Home DNA Test is just as accurate as our standard legal tests and will provide absolutely conclusive results. The only difference between the private test and the legal test is whether the sample collection is witnessed.
